Apex Awarded Lake Hawea WWTP Upgrade

08 December 2021

Apex is pleased to have been awarded a contract by the Queenstown Lakes District Council to design and build an upgrade to the wastewater treatment plant at Lake Hawea.

Lake Hawea is a rapidly growing township in the Queenstown Lakes District.  Due to the speed of this growth, a temporary solution needed to be delivered quickly to keep the local treatment plant in compliance while a full new replacement plant is designed.

Consisting of an oxidation pond, with trenches and an irrigation field for disposal of treated wastewater, the plant requires optimisation to achieve a reduction in nitrogen levels and allow further use of the irrigation system in winter months.

The upgrade will see the installation of a sidestream Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) to provide biological removal of nitrogen, the “winterisation” of the irrigation system to prevent issues with freezing, and other process improvements.

Works are scheduled to be completed by the end of July 2022.
