Steve Kroening
Dr Steve Kroening is a founding Director of Apex Water Ltd, being involved since its inception in February 2009. Steve holds a PhD in Microbiology and a Graduate Diploma in Strategic Management.
Steve has travelled to many countries around the world providing consultancy services and commissioning wastewater treatment plants. He has published peer-reviewed articles and presented at numerous waste management conferences.
Matt Savage
Dr Matt Savage is a founding Director of Apex Water Ltd; determined to create a company that helps the industry grow sustainably while caring for the environment. Matt is a chartered chemical engineer with a PhD in Chemical & Process Engineering.
Matt was awarded the inaugural CH2M Beca Young Water Professional of the Year Award in 2009. He regularly writes technical editorials for various industry magazines and journals.
Tim Gibson
Tim Gibson was appointed as a Director and Chairman of Apex Water Ltd in July 2015. Tim started his career as a civil engineer and has progressed over time into corporate management roles within the industry. In addition to his civil engineering background, Tim holds a Master of Business Administration and has substantial experience in senior management roles in the contracting and infrastructure sectors.
Tim is currently the Chief Executive Officer at Citycare Water and is responsible for building and strengthening Citycare Water's maintenance operations throughout New Zealand. Tim brings extensive leadership, contract management and infrastructure expertise to the Apex Board table.
Mark Todd
Mark Todd was appointed as a Director in August 2019. Mark’s executive career concluded with 17 years working for outdoor clothing and equipment brand Kathmandu, as Chief Financial Officer and latterly Chief Operating Officer. Mark was also a Director of Kathmandu Holdings for six years after it was listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) and New Zealand Exchange (NZX) in 2009. Mark is now a full-time independent consultant and non-executive Director of a variety of national brand and consumer-focused businesses. He is a Director and chairs the Risk Audit and Finance subcommittee of City Care Group. His other Director appointments currently include Paper Plus, McKenzie and Willis and Lotto New Zealand. He is also an Advisory Board member for Stirling Sports, Mark is a Chartered Accountant and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors.
Bill Bayfield
Bill Bayfield was appointed as a Director in January 2024. Bill is new to Director roles having recently completed more than 3 years as the establishment CEO, and subsequently the CEO of Taumata Arowai, our new water regulator. He has over 40 years experience in water, regulation and organisational management primarily with Regional Councils and the Ministry for the Environment.
He was CEO at the Bay of Plenty Regional Council (5 years) and at Environment Canterbury (10 years) and recently completed a short stint as CEO at Hawkes Bay Regional Council assisting with the recovery from cyclone Gabriel. Bill is looking forward to bringing his experience in managing people, processes, projects and water to bear for Apex Water.
Andrew Paton
Andrew has been the General Manager of Apex Water since July 2019. Andrew has significance experience in both New Zealand and overseas managing the delivery of water and wastewater projects and has held management roles in a number of organisations in the water industry. He holds a degree in Chemical and Materials Engineering and has a Graduate Diploma in Accounting.
